We invite you to participate in “Siege: Engines of War,” November 3-5, 2011, for Brain Games, a weekend challenge at Southwestern Adventist University, in Keene, Texas.
We will host three to four students and one sponsor from each school with housing, meals, and help with transportation costs.
Siege Warfare
“Siege: Engines of War” participants will investigate the science of force and trajectory in various forms within the historical concept of siege warfare. When you arrive on campus Thursday, November 3, we will describe your tasks and the parameters under which you must complete them.
Your on-campus tasks will involve constructing apparatus where you will attempt to vary the energy and direction in order to predict target objectives, i.e. functioning catapults, slings, trebuchets, and/or rockets! This means that you will need to be versed in the concepts of ballistics, i.e. angle, force, distance, trigonometry, and so forth.
Awards
The Saturday night Brain Games Mathletics competition will involve a game-show like contest with teams of three vying for the $9,000 first place prize ($2,000 per player and $1,000 departmental). Second place will receive $4,750 ($1,000 per player, $750 departmental). Third place will receive $2,500 ($500 per player, $500 departmental). The prizes are awarded to each school to use in their history, math or science departments and each winning student participant is awarded the same amount in a scholarship to Southwestern Adventist University. All mathematics questions are based on at least sophomore level academics. As the Brain Games date approaches, we will direct you to information that will help you succeed in the event.
